I have been interested in Photography since about the age of 8. starting with Black and White including doing my own processing.

Over the years I have enjoyed mainly Landscape Photography with Transparency as well as Film.

I am now shooting almost exclusively in Infrared (IR). I started this in the late '90s, shooting in Black and White as well as Colour Slide Film.

In 2009 I started shooting in Digital with a converted Nikon D100 which had a 630nm filter in place. I also used an 830nm filter for "Full Infrared".

Shooting IR at 630nm with a DSLR is all well and good! You see a normal image through the view finder before taking the picture, but then see the IR image when reviewing the result. There is some trial and error in the exposure. This is a great improvement on using film, because you can see the result immediately, and make adjustments as necessary. However the 830nm filter is opaque, so you cannot even see what you are shooting through the camera, and have to use a tripod as with film cameras. You do however see the result immediately as with the 630nm filter.

In 2019 I changed the camera to an Olympus E-M10 Mirrorless camera converted to 630nm IR by LifePixel once again. I added a 700nm filter to my range. You can see the effects you can obtain by the full range of filters here.

Using a Mirrorless Camera has made a HUGE difference to my IR Photography. When you look through the viewfinder using any of the filters you can see what you get which is brilliant!

White Balance

Now, this is something all beginners with Digital IR have to master, and can come as a bit of a surprise!

The following three images were shot using the in camera 630nm filter.

The Auto White Balance in the camera will just produce a red image like this:

Auto White Balance
Bantry House Terrace & Stables Auto White Balance

I shoot using RAW not jpg or tiff format for the best Post Processing experience. So applying the correct White Balance in Ansel you get this:

Correct White Balance
Bantry House Terrace & Stables with correct White Balance

And finally applying the Red/Blue Channel Swap.
